This is the class for those looking to master their skills in starting a horse from scratch.

Starting with groundwork preparing the young horse for first saddling and ride the main focus is achievement through low stress to horse and rider. This 4-day course is to safely teach the rider about the first saddling through to riding out in the snaffle bit.

Starting Under Saddle (Breaking in) Clinic Module 1 - Auditor

Day 1

Hooking on process
• How to get the communication process started
• Reading your colts body language
• When and how to introduce the flag
• How and when to introduce the lass rope
• Understanding what the different body languages mean
• Interact and communicate with your colt through body positioning
• How to have your colt catch you
• Effective haltering techniques for the learning horse
• How to lead your horse by his feet

Establish groundwork techniques

• How to get the halter and lead rope working for you
• Teaching the colt to lead
• Understanding the 4 body positions of the colt
         – The head and neck
         – The front feet and legs and shoulders
         – The rib cage and back
         – The hind quarter and back feet n legs
• Learn how to direct and control all four areas of your horses body from the ground

First saddling

• The importance of your emotional state when starting a colt under saddle
• Approaching the colt with a saddle for the first time
• The importance of your body language and positioning in relation to the horse
• How to place the saddle on the horse for the first time
• Tightening the girth for the first time
• What to do once the saddle is on and girthed up tight for the first time
• How to deal with your anxiety when the horse bucks or get worried with the saddle on for the first time
• What to do if the horse won’t move-out with the saddle

First unsaddling process

• How to safely unsaddle for the first time
• Dealing with problems that arise with the first unsaddling

First bath or washing down of the horse

• Introducing the horse to the hose
• How to first apply water to the horse
• How to safely wash the horses body
• Washing out the tail and mane
• How to wash your horses face

Day 2
First ride preparation

• How to mentally prepare yourself for the first ride on a colt
• Determining when the horse is ready for the first ride

The use of a lead horse when colt starting

• The roll of a lead horse
• Selecting the right lead horse
• Where to position the lead horse on the colt when moving out
• How to hold the lead rein from the colt when using the lead horse
• When to dally and when not to
• How to flag the colt from the lead horse
• Dealing with common problems that can arise from the colt whilst on the lead horse
• Preparing the colt for the first ride from the lead horse.

First bridling

The first ride out of the Arena

Day 4

The first ride out into the bush

• Overcoming common problems that arise during bush riding with the colt for the first time
• What to look for when noticing the changes or try’s from your colt

The first trailer load and ride for the colt

• Preparing yourself mentally for the first trailer loading and travel
• How to prepare the colt for trailer loading
• How to safely load the colt into the trailer
• How to safely unload the colt of the trailer
• How to safely tie the colt in the trailer
• Dealing with common problems with trailer loading
• How to safely travel with your colt on the trailer for the first time.
• Dealing with common problems with travel
• How to teach the young horse to enter a crush/stocks safely

Applying the stock whip or the rope

• Preparing your mindset for the application of the stock whip or rope
• Preparation to the colt for accepting the stock whip or rope
